THOUSANDS of people tasted life in the Paras with a gruelling challenge.
The Paras’ 10 is a ten-mile race held at Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire, where many competitors complete the cross-country run in boots while carrying 35lb backpacks.
Yesterday, more than 2,000 people lined up to take part in the run, with County Durham-born TV presenter Matt Baker firing the starting gun.
The Countryfile presenter took part in the race in 2004 for children’s TV programme Blue Peter.
Before the race, a bugler marked a minute’s silence in honour of those who died in the 9/11 attacks.
Major Ben Harrop said about two-thirds of the entrants carried the 35lb backpack, as those in military training would.
He said: “The race is one of a selection of events people have to do to enter the Parachute Regiment.”
The estimated £100,000 raised yesterday will go to the Parachute Regiment Charity, which supports the welfare of serving and retired soldiers and families.
