ABOUT 1,000 cannabis plants with a street value of more than £400,000 have been discovered by police in a dawn raid.

Officers discovered the haul at a property in Elwick, near Hartlepool today.

A 44-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of the production of cannabis and is in police custody.

The plants are to be sent for forensic examination to confirm that they are cannabis.

Hartlepool Drugs Unit Sergeant Daryll Tomlinson said: "These plants could have been destined for the streets of Cleveland, the co-ordinated and robust effort of officers has once again stopped the vicious cycle of these illegal substances from affecting our local communities."

Anyone with information on drugs misuse is asked to contact Cleveland Police on 01642-326326.
