SUNDERLAND Harriers carried off the £500 team prize in yesterday's inaugural Sunderland City 10K, won by Morpeth veteran Ian Hud-spith.
The Wearside club had their three male runners, Kevin Calvert, Stephen Duffy and over-45 veteran Paul Redman in sixth, seventh and eighth positions, Michelle Holt was third in the women's race and the final team member, 14-year-old Luca Irvine, was fourth in the under-15 3K junior run.
Hudspith dominated the main event, leading from start to finish in a modest time for the flat course of 31 mins 15 secs, beating Scottish raider Stuart Gibson (Cambuslang) by 1 min 18 secs. The former Great Britain World Cross Country Championships international, now 40, added the Sunderland success to his three consecutive victories in the Middlesbrough Tees Pride 10K.
There was a surprise when former Wallsend Harrier Sonia Samuel, also a Great Britain international, claimed third place overall - usually a strictly male preserve - in 34 mins 32 secs, a minute outside her personal-best. Second was Durham City's former North-East cross country champion and last year's Darlington and Tees Pride 10Ks winner, Rosie Smith in ninth place overall in 36 mins 43 secs.
