THIS is my attempt to bring the past into the present, and possibly even beam it into the future.
Attached in an audio sort of a way should be my five minutes of fame on BBC Tees this afternoon in which I talk about my impending visit to Mowden Junior School in Darlington. The school is going to the town's South Park this week, and they wanted me as a historical warm-up act to tell them what to look out for.
After my five minutes of radio fame, I went to the school and discovered that in their hall they had a wall dedicated to my visit last year. To see it unexpectedly felt very gratifying and yet slightly stalkerish at the same time.
But what of the past have I beamed into their futures? They seemed transfixed by the story of the ghostly grey headless lady who crosses a long-demolished bridge over the Skerne moaning piteously about her lack of a head (I don't know how she does this weeping and wailing when she lacks the necessary orifices out of which to weep and wail).
I wonder if anything else sank in?
I'm glad to report that they behaved extremely well, far better than your average WI: very little talking or fidgeting and absolutely no one fell asleep. In fact, despite my initial apprehension, I think I probably enjoyed the afternoon, so my thanks to them for putting up with me.
