The grandfather, who is 65 and lives in Burnhope, County Durham, hopes more people will sign up for the Sunderland City 10k to see what the city and race route have to offer.

He said: “I also hope that as many people as possible who are around my age, or who perhaps aren’t into sport but would like to improve their health and fitness, will see the 10k as a great opportunity to get inspired and start running.”

After the Sunderland run, the author will be straight back in training for a team relay event for Derwentside Athletic Club in September, running a 97-mile route through Northumberland to Holy Island to raise money for the charity Integrating Children, which aims to help disabled children in Durham and Chester-le-Street.
