A PENSIONER has been robbed of thousands of pounds after a conman tricked his way into his home.
The 73-year-old victim, from Coxhoe, County Durham, allowed the man into his home after he knocked on his back door claiming to be from 'the water board'.
The crook distracted the pensioner by getting him to run taps in his kitchen, before unlocking the front door for his accomplice.
The second man went upstairs into the bedrooms and stole £12,000 and financial documents.
After hearing him, the victim challenged the burglars and they ran away towards Coxhoe's Front Street.
The incident happened at about 4.15pm on Monday, May 23.
Police believe a grey BMW3 series coupe was parked on the corner of The Grove and Front Street at the time with two men inside, one of whom appeared to be keeping watch on the victim's home.
The BMW, with a registration including 09 KXN or similar, was seen an hour earlier passing the man's home with four men inside paying great attention to houses on the street.
One of them, said to be the lookout, is believed to have been seen at about 1pm walking close to the victim's home, with another man. Both had identification cards round their necks.
Durham Police are appealing for information and have issued an e-fit of a man they wish to speak to. Anyone who can help is asked to call DC Turner on 0191-3752692.
