A RUNNING club is bidding for a substantial cash prize as part of new event.
Sedgefield Harriers is aiming for top spot in the Sunderland City 10k’s Athletic Club Challenge, with £500 going to the winning team.
The second place club will win £200 and the third will win £100, to assist with training and development costs.
Sedgefield Harrier Chris Lines said: “It is a great initiative and the £500 first prize certainly appeals a lot to grassroots running clubs like the Sedgefield Harriers.
“It will help give us real focus as we continue our training ahead of the race.
“The beauty of this event is that the relatively flat course and the attractive route make it ideal for participants of all abilities.
“Whether our team finishes high up the leader board of not, it should be a really enjoyable run for all of us.”
Each team must have at least five members taking part in the 10k, including one woman and one child taking part in the event’s junior run.
Olympic medallist Steve Cram, one of the race organisers, said: “The redspottedhanky.
com Sunderland City 10k Athletic Club Challenge is a great way for local runners and their clubs to enjoy an exciting team event and race for a substantial cash prize.
“I am delighted that the Sedgefield Harriers team is gearing up for a shot at the title and I wish them and everyone else taking part on the day the very best of luck.”
The route will take in landmarks, including the Stadium of Light, Mowbray Park, the National Glass Centre, marina and seafront.
The course is gentle, with no steep climbs.
Cram said: “We have already had team entries from a number of other clubs and we hope as many as possible will get involved and enjoy a brilliant 10k.”
