A FATHER last night told how he watched in horror as a bouncy castle came loose from its pegs, throwing his son into the air.
Koby Dakin, seven, suffered serious injuries in the incident during a christening celebration at the White House Hotel, in Whitby, North Yorkshire, on Sunday afternoon.
His nine-year-old brother, Kyle, and a seven-year-old girl were also hurt when the bouncy castle was caught in a gust of wind.
The boys’ father, Damien Young, 32, said: “It was getting quite windy, so we were thinking we’d better take them off. It didn’t look very secure.
The next thing, it just took off and flew up and spun around in the air. I saw my son laid on the floor and the other two holding their heads.”
The inflatable blew across a road and caught on a telegraph pole.
Koby was airlifted to The James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, by the Great North Air Ambulance.
His mother, Terry Dakin, 33, said he is being treated for a broken leg, two arm fractures, a broken rib, a punctured lung and head trauma.
Last night his condition was described as stable, but poorly.
Kyle suffered a leg injury and the seven-year-old girl was left with head injuries and concussion. Both were taken to hospital in Scarborough, where they were said to be in a stable condition yesterday.
The injured boys’ grandfather, Andy Dakin, who arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, said: “The bouncy castle was five foot off the top of the pole and at the bottom of the wall and that’s where my grandson ended up, smashed into the wall.”
Chief Inspector Steve Smith, of North Yorkshire Police, said: “It appears that the bouncy castle blew away in the winds and the three young people who were in it at the time got taken off the ground, and they have received some quite serious injuries in two cases.”
A force spokesman added: “The circumstances leading to the bouncy castle leaving its tether will be conducted by officers from the environmental health department at Scarborough Borough Council.”
A spokeswoman for the hotel said: “At this moment, the thoughts of everybody at the White House are with the children and their families.”
