POLICE have said there is no substance to malicious allegations being made against a man in a North Yorkshire village.
Anonymous letters in envelopes marked with the recipients' address and the wording "Warning to residents" have been circulated to people and organisations in Carlton Minniot.
An investigation has been launched and police are appealing for the public's help in gathering forensic evidence to help identify the sender. The exact nature of the allegations has not been revealed.
Inspector Dave Murray said: "I would like to reassure members of the public that we have found no evidence whatsoever to substantiate the claims made in the letter.
"I would ask that if you have received such a letter that you hand it to the police straight away.
I am especially keen to hear from anyone who may have not yet opened one of these letters as it could provide useful forensic evidence to identify the sender."
Anyone who can help should contact Insp Murray at Thirsk Police Station on 0845-60-60-247. Or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555-111.
