TEENAGER Luke Boston has become a star at his local golf club after hitting a hole in one at a charity match.

Luke’s lucky strike won him a new car worth more than £12,000 – even though he is too young to drive.

The 16-year-old, who has a handicap of 26, played the perfect shot at the par three fourth hole at Richmond Golf Club.

Luke, from Brompton on Swale, in North Yorkshire, should have been in school revising for his GCSE exams when the tournament started on Friday. But after he was invited as a last minute standin, he was excused from classes by his teachers as a reward for his hard work.

After a five-month break from the game during winter, the early signs were not promising when Luke failed to contribute a single point to his team’s score over the first three holes.

But his return to form came at the right moment as he sank his tee shot at the only hole on the course sponsored by local car dealer SG Petch.

Because of his age, Luke will receive a cash equivalent instead of the car.

He said: “It was quite lucky, but I’m not going to complain.

The shot felt really nice when I hit it and it ended up in the hole.

“We went back to the clubhouse and I think they were all gobsmacked. I’ve never heard of anyone getting a hole in one there.

“I’m going to put some of the money away to buy a car when I’m old enough and I’ll buy some new golf clubs, but I’d like to take my family away on holiday.”

Luke’s mother, Katrina George, 44, thought he was playing a practical joke when he called with the news.

She said: “At first I thought he said he’d hit a car and I imagined the ball going through someone’s windscreen, but then he said he’d won a car.

“I didn’t believe him and he had to put one of his friends on to convince me. I’m so pleased for him – he’s worked so hard at school and he really deserves it.”

James Hare, the golf professional at the club, said: “It’s a fantastic achievement for a young lad – especially as he hasn’t played over winter.

There are players here who haven’t had one in 40 or 50 years of playing, so there is an element of chance about it, but he must have hit it well.”
