A woman was forced to leave her children with her knife-wielding partner after he smashed a window at her home.
Police received a call at 12.30am yesterday from a woman saying she had fled her home in Hebburn, South Tyneside, leaving her children, aged 12 and 17, with the man.
When the area command officers arrived, the man refused to come out of the house. He was armed with a knife and shouting threats and he was seen by police holding one of the children at the window.
Police negotiators and armed police were called to the scene who persuaded the man to give himself up and then arrested him.
The incident lasted two hours and both children were unharmed.
The man last night remained in police custody at South Shields police station.
