PASSENGERS were evacuated and delayed after a train pulled into a busy station with its engine on fire.
The 5.55pm East Coast train to London King's Cross pulled into platform three at York Station on Wednesday with flames leaping from the engine.
Passengers waiting for the train were moved off the platform back to the concourse and were told to wait for a later train.
A spokesman for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was caused by an over-heated turbo.
Firefighters liaised with train engineers and used hoses to cool the locomotive.
Passenger Rachel Simpson, 29, said: "There were flames coming out of the top.
"Everybody was standing on the platform.
"Some people moved to get on, but were told to get off. We all got moved back to the concourse."
She said the train pulled in with flames visible, looking like flashing lights.
East Coast reported delays of up to 20 minutes on other services through York.
Some trains were delayed getting into the station, while they waited for available platforms.
