POLICE are appealing for two vital witnesses to come forward after a 12-year-old boy was killed in a road accident.

It happened just after 7.40am today, just past the Stones Garage, between two bus stops on the A64 at West Heslerton, North Yorkshire.

The boy was crossing the road and heading towards a bus stop when he was hit. The collision involved a blue-grey Renault Scenic and a white Transit van.

He was taken to Scarborough General Hospital with serious injuries where he died.

The A64 was closed in both directions following the incident.

Traffic Sergeant John Clayton, of North Yorkshire Roads Policing Group, said: "I am urging anyone who was in the area at the time of the collision to come forward.

"In particular I need to speak to the drivers of two vehicles which passed through the scene a few moments after it occurred and ask them to contact me as soon as possible."

Anyone who can assist with this enquiry should call Traffic Sergeant Clayton on 0845-6060247.
