POLICE are calling on football supporters to enjoy this weekend's big derby match responsibly and reminded fans that disorder will not be tolerated.

A sell-out crowd of more than 48,000 is expected at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, as Sunderland hope to avenge their 5-1 humiliation at the hands of arch rivals Newcastle United earlier in the season.

Chief Superintendent Rachel Kearton, Sunderland Area Commander, said: "Northumbria Police hopes all fans have an enjoyable derby day".

She added: "We know that the overwhelming majority of fans are well-behaved and want nothing more than to attend the game and enjoy the occasion and that is what we are working towards.

"Supporters will receive a warm welcome in Sunderland but anyone intent on causing problems will be dealt with firmly".

Paul Weir, head of safety and security at the Stadium of Light, added: ""We understand that this particular game is always steeped in passion and emotion for both sets of fans.

"It is an important game of football, not something that should provoke anti-social behaviour, so our message to fans is to please enjoy the occasion and please respect one another."

Supporters attending the game are being warned about access restrictions near the stadium on matchday.

The Sheepfolds industrial estate will be closed to vehicles and some restrictions will also be in place for pedestrians.

There will also be measures in force to disperse fans after the game, which kicks off at midday. Security staff at Sunderland said the measures were designed for the safety of supporters and requested patience and co-operation on the day, with supporters advised to arrive early to avoid any potential delays getting into the stadium.

The Metro service will be suspended between South Gosforth and North Shields via the coast on the day of the game, with a replacement bus service in operation.
