SNOW returned to the region yesterday, with heavy showers falling over North Yorkshire.
Trains at Grosmont, on the North Yorks Moors, managed to stay operational despite heavy showers that left snow on the railway lines.
But the freezing weather has taken its toll on rolling stock. Staff and volunteers checking engines and coaches after the snow and ice of previous weeks had thawed discovered that the equipment used to heat the trains, especially boilers and pipework, was in need of repair.
They still had enough stock with working heating systems to ensure passengers were not disappointed and services kept running over the weekend and on Bank Holiday Monday.
Last night, temperatures were expected to drop below zero again.
