A CYCLIST has been killed after he was involved in an accident with a taxi as he made his way home from a night out.

Anthony Joseph McGee died shortly after midnight on Monday in The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, following the accident in Redcar Lane, Redcar.

The 40-year-old had just left the Redcar Working Men’s Unionist Club, in Dene Grove, when there was an accident involving a white Vauxhall Astra private hire taxi, near the junction with Redcar Lane.

Mr McGee suffered severe injuries and, despite the efforts of paramedics, he was pronounced dead in hospital.

His mother paid tribute last night. She said: “Anthony was a very thoughtful and caring son, and a brother to Terry. He enjoyed himself and will be sorely missed by all of his family and friends.”

Yesterday, family and friends were in the working men’s club to pay their respects to Mr McGee, with many members close to tears.

They were all too shocked and distressed to talk about their loss.

A Union flag on the club’s roof was flying at half mast in memory of Mr McGee.

Police officers are trying to find out exactly what happened and are calling for witnesses to come forward.

A spokeswoman said: “Mr McGee had just left Redcar Working Mens’ Unionist Club on his pedal cycle moments before being in a collision with a white Vauxhall Astra estate private hire taxi.”

It is known that at least one vehicle swerved to avoid Mr McGee and police are appealing to this driver, and any other witnesses to come forward, particularly those people who saw Mr McGee immediately before the collision.

Witnesses, or anyone with information relating to the incident, are asked to call Acting Sergeant Paul Hardwick or PC Matt Simpson on 01642-326326.
