FRIENDS who met through weekly knitting groups are holding a teddy bears' picnic with a difference to support a south Durham hospice.

All the bears displayed at four knitting groups will be stitched by members of the groups, which meet in Bishop Auckland, Darlington and Spennymoor.

The knitters are appealing for donations of wool so they can make the bears in time for National Knitting Week from October 14 to 21.

The groups are Bishop Auckland Knit n Natter, led by Carrie Anne Dennison, Darlington In Stitches and Knit Knots, led by Becky Sunter, and SpennyKnit, led at Spennymoor by Andrea Beel.

Their main event will be at the Four Clocks Centre, in Bishop Auckland, on October 20 when the bears will be on show and goods will be sold for The Butterwick Hospice.

Dontations of wool can be left at the Tabbydashery wool stall at the outdoor Saturday market in Darlington.
