A CAR in which a grandmother driving her daughter and grandchildren were travelling in, rolled several times after being involved in an accident on the A1.

The full circumstances behind the crash on Saturday evening, which led to the northbound carriageway being closed, remain unclear.

The accident happened just before 5.50pm on the Leeming Bar stretch of road near to Little Fencote, North Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire Police were first on the scene, initially believing six vehicles were involved.

They alerted North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, which sent appliances from Richmond and Colburn and its heavy rescue unit from Ripon.

The female driver, in her 50s, was cut free after the car rolled over several times before coming to rest. She was airlifted to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, by the Cleveland Police helicopter. The extent of her injuries has not been revealed.

The woman's daughter was taken for treatment at Darlington hospital.

The police said they were unsure how many children were in the back, but believe there were three and that they were unhurt.

Police closed the road just after 6pm and it remained shut until 11.50pm. Officers say it later transpired that the other vehicles had stopped after the accident and were not directly involved.
