A NORTH-EAST pub has reopened following a £100,000 refurbishment.
Graham and Sam Atkinson are hoping The Bluebell, in Bishopton, near Stockton, will buck the national trend, which sees dozens of pubs closing every week.
The pub reopened on Friday following two weeks of renovations.
Mr Atkinson, who became licensee in August, said: “Of course pubs are going through a hard time and people’s habits are changing, but I’m not prepared to accept that the day of the village pub has ended.
“Give your customers good beer, pleasant surroundings and home-cooked food at a price they can afford and we should be well on our way.”
He admits the trade has been hit by the smoking ban and supermarkets selling cheap alcohol, but he believes there is a strong future ahead.
“The pub is the focal point of the community, especially in Bishopton, where there isn’t even a shop,” said Mr Atkinson. “It’s a place to meet, catch up on gossip and hear what’s happening in the area.
“This village once supported five pubs. Now there are only two and I’m determined The Bluebell will go from strength to strength.
“We’ll also be supporting the local farms by using their produce whenever possible.”
