BEERS of all shades and flavours are flowing at one of the North-East’s newer real ale festivals.

Chester-le-Street Cricket Club is staging its third annual beer festival after earning popular feedback in the real ale community for its first two events.

The festival follows the award of Club of the Year by the Durham branch of the Campaign for Real Ale for third year in succession. It also won the Best Private Club category in the first Chester-le-Street Best Bar None accolades recently.

Festival-goers can sample 24 real ales and ciders produced by local and national micro-breweries.

Among the local suppliers are the Consett Ale Works and The Stables brewery, at Beamish.

Festival director Jonathan Alderside said he was particularly looking forward to sampling Ampleforth Cider, produced at the North Yorkshire monastery.

The festival opened yesterday and will continue today until drink runs out.

Entry is £3, with proceeds going to the Cyrenians, a charity that helps homeless people.
