A GAMBIAN wood carver is hoping to sell his goods in the UK, so he can buy food for his family – with the help of a woman from the region.
Arty Joof is a woodcarver in the West African country, living in the town of Brikama, away from the main tourist trail.
Alison Lablaine, of Thirsk, North Yorkshire, met Mr Joof during a year living and working in Gambia.
Mr Joof uses local wood to make hand-carved pieces, which can be personalised and sold in the UK.
All of the money made from his crafts goes to the Joof family and it is hoped to extend the scheme to other local craftsmen.
Visitors to White Rose Books, in the Market Place, Thirsk, on Sunday, between 11am and 3pm, can find out more about his work and the country.
