TERRY Christie has been enjoying the new-look 12-page Memories supplement that is now coming out every Thursday with The Northern Echo.
It has inspired him to write his memories of bus travel. Terry, 46, lives in East Herrington, Sunderland, and has learning difficulties but a keen eye: ====================================== Many years ago when I was a young boy, I used to travel to school on the Sunderland Corporation Transport buses. I remember Leyland Panther buses, which accepted tokens, and also the infamous Daimler Roadliners, AEC Swifts, Bristol REs and Daimler Fleetlines.
"My great memories of this era are of wonderful double-deckers and of the Daimler back-enders, buses which had operated on the streets of Sunderland since the early 1950s when they replaced the trams.
Sunderland Corporation Transport was ended on Saturday, March 31, 1973, and was replaced by Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive which, in turn, was taken over by Sunderland Busways at the end of 1986. Now it is Stagecoach.
I still travel on the buses all the time and I know all of the drivers and inspectors, and I am looking forward to next year's Vintage Car and Bus Preservation Rally at the Seaburn Showfield, Sunderland, on Bank Holiday Monday, which will be great to see.
