A GREEN-FINGERED eight-year-old boy has left experienced gardeners scratching their heads with his homegrown sunflowers.

Henry Ward, from Merrybent, near Darlington, has grown sunflowers which each have more than 20 flower heads.

The youngster planted the seeds in pots before planting them outside.

His mother, Hannah, said that Henry, who attends Northwood School, in Darlington, has a keen interest in gardening.

She said: “We’ve got a gardener and Henry gets tips from him.

“He enjoys it so much, he even does our neighbours’ gardens as well.

“He didn’t do anything special with the sunflowers – he just bought the seeds from Sainsbury’s and planted them.”

The family’s gardener, Alec Swales, said: “You normally get two or three flowers on sunflowers.

“I’ve been gardening all my life and I’ve never seen as many.”
