POLICE are continuing to investigate the death of a woman after a shooting incident.

Police and paramedics were called to a house in Middleham, near Leyburn, North Yorkshire, at about 10.30pm last night.

The body of a 26-year-old woman was found at the scene.

It is believed she died from a single gun shot wound to the head.

The incident happened in a small cottage behind the Black Bull pub in the centre of the historic racing town.

One resident said a man in his 30s was taken away by police after the incident.

It is understood he and the dead woman recently moved into the cottage.

The road past the house is still cordoned off today with several officers remaining at the scene.

A police spokesman said: "North Yorkshire Police were called to an address in East Witton Road, Middleham, at 10.25pm last night by the ambulance service folllowing the sudden death of a 26-year-old woman.

"Police are investigating the circumstances of the death and a post mortem is expected to be carried out later today."
