FIVE friends of a DJ who died after he grabbed a 25,000-volt overhead power line are organising a rave in his memory.

Dance music fan Andrew Minto, 23, died a week after he was injured when he climbed on a stationary train to retrieve one of his shoes.

Organisers of two club nights he regularly attended are joining forces for a memorial rave. Ross Woodward, known as DJ Frostie, organised the Oasis night at Lennon’s, in Bishop Auckland, until 18 months ago.

He has teamed up with organisers of Raveolution, a regular dance night held in Durham City, which Mr Minto, from West Cornforth, was a fan of, for a celebration of his life.

The rave will be at Club Q, in Bishop Auckland market place, on Friday, October 22.

Entry is free, but money will be raised for the Great North Air Ambulance and the critical care unit at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle, where Mr Minto was treated.

Mr Woodward said: “Andrew was there every month, he was a great lad and had a lot of friends in the dance scene. Everyone thought well of him. He was a genuine fan of the music, a true raver and one of the soundest lads you could ever wish to meet.

“When I heard about what happened, I was in two minds about what to do, but in the end, decided we had to do something in his memory.

“All of his favourite DJs have volunteered to play for free – it is going to be the night Andrew would have loved.”

Other organisers include Andrew Best (DJ Zippy), Richard Metcalfe (DJ Trixy), Darren Wright and James Harthorn.

More than 700 people have joined a tribute group set up on the Facebook website, while memorial messages have also been left on dance music sites.

DJ Lee Tobin, who will play on the memorial night, wrote: “I’m devastated about losing Andrew, been close mates for about eight years, great lad and gentleman.

“He used to love raving and we’ve had some quality nights that will never be forgotten.”

Mr Minto’s funeral was held last week, where money was raised for the two charities.
