I WAS sorry to read that former Tottenham Hotspur and England centre-forward Bobby Smith had died at the age of 77 (Echo, September 21).
I remember him from the early 1960s. His club captain was Danny Blanchflower and when the two of them were on opposite sides in a forthcoming England v Northern Ireland international, Blanchflower was asked in a TV interview how he would cope with this.
His tongue-in-cheek reply was: “I’ll play my usual game with Bobby – ask for the ball.”
