FOOTBALL is essentially a simple game, kicking a ball about with basic rules that largely ensure fighting does not erupt. Somewhat admirably, FIFA has tried to ensure that the situation remains unchanged but this has meant that the game can be high-jacked by teams determined to defend and not lose (witness some of the World Cup group matches).

It has been suggested that the goal areas be enlarged, an idea which would increase the number of goals, but this has been flatly rejected. As an alternative I would suggest that a height restriction of 5ft be imposed on goalkeepers in the adult game.

The game, let alone team photographs, would be transformed. Penalties would be converted more easily and the time wasting formation of defensive walls would be nullified. I’m sure that my suggestion will be rejected on grounds of political correctness and/or positive discrimination but I contend that we need lateral thinking. The football establishment needs to thinks ‘outside the box’.
