CHILDREN have taken time out from class to help restore a monument to the region’s mining heritage.

The pit wheel from Shildon Colliery, in County Durham, was moved to the village of Kibblesworth, near Gateshead, in the late Eighties, but has not been repaired since.

Last week, children from Kibblesworth Primary School joined staff and contractors to give the wheel a coat of paint.

Lamesley Parish Council has been working with housing company Frank Haslam Milan North-East and The Gateshead Housing Company to restore the monument.

Heather Miller, from Frank Haslam Milan, said: “The wheel is symbolic to the village.

“By involving local schoolchildren, not only does it teach them the history of the village but they will also grow up to respect the area in which they live.”
