HUNDREDS of youngsters are developing confidence by treading the boards.

Children from five primary schools across Redcar and Cleveland will perform Alice, the Musical, at Middlesbrough Theatre, for three nights from tomorrow.

The play has been co-ordinated by music teacher Chris Nixon and has involved more than 400 youngsters from Coatham, Dormanstown, Wilton, Zetland and Lakes primary schools.

Community groups have also been involved, including Topline Commuunity Arts Project and Coatham and Dormanstown Community Partnership.

Rehearsals for the two-hour performances, featuring drama, music and dance, backed by a band made up of local teachers, have been organised since January.

Ticket sales will help fund the £12,000 performance, backed up by a series of fund-raisers.

Mr Nixon said: "We've got 400 youngsters being creative, developing confidence and self-esteem in a fun and educational way - isn't that fantastic? I'm absolutely delighted with the end product - it's going to be an excellent show."

Tickets, priced £5, are available from the Middlesbrough Theatre box office on (01642) 815181.
