A MAN accused of murdering his girlfriend was found hanged in his cell at Durham Prison, an inquest heard yesterday.
Anthony Maguire, 34, was found face down on his bunk, with a television flex wrapped twice around his neck.
Prison officer David Pilkington told Chester-le-Street Magistrates' Court that the other end of the wire was tied to the bunk above him.
He said Mr Maguire must have died between 1.45pm and 2.15pm on October 21 when his cell mate was meeting visitors.
Mr Maguire was accused of murdering 19-year-old bank worker Vicki Reay by throttling her with bed sheets.
Her body was found at her house in Priestlands Crescent, Hexham, Northumberland, on October 17, 2004, after he told police he had killed her because "she knew too much".
Psychiatric nurse Karen Watson assessed Mr Maguire and said there was no indication he would take his own life. She said he had mild withdrawal symptoms from heroin abuse but refused medication.
Tests showed no drugs or alcohol in his system other than traces of painkillers.
Mrs Watson said: "There was no concern over his mood. There were no identifiable concerns. He did look a little down, but he was in prison."
Pathologist Nigel Cooper said there was nothing to indicate Mr Maguire had been assaulted or suffered any violence. He confirmed he had died as a result of pressure on the neck due to hanging.
The hearing continues
