FOOTBALL fans in the North-East have been warned they could face a stiff penalty if they tune into World Cup matches without a TV licence.
During Euro 2004, almost 1,400 evaders were caught in the region, and TV Licensing is warning viewers that officers will continue to visit unlicensed addresses throughout the whole of the World Cup period.
Throughout the 2004 tournament, 440 evaders were caught in Newcastle, 160 in Darlington, 212 in Middlesbrough and 147 in York. Evaders were also caught in Durham, Hartlepool, and Bishop Auckland, as well as Spennymoor, Sunderland and Billingham.
A database of more than 28 million addresses show officers the properties that have no record of a TV licence, so they know exactly where to visit. If caught, evaders risk a trip to court and a fine of up to £1,000.
A colour TV licence costs £131.50.
