AFRICAN drummers, Indian dancers and the legend of the Lambton Worm came together yesterday to celebrate the diversity of cultures to be found in the North-East.

Diverse Durham is a festival of arts and crafts from around the world being staged in Durham City during Adult Learners' Week.

Events are taking place in Clayport Library, the Market Place, St Nicholas's Church and Millennium Place for the next three days.

Clayport Library manager Geoff Pratt said: "It aims to increase awareness of the diversity of the county and showcase the broad spectrum of cultural activities that take place."

Yesterday, there was Japanese origami at Clayport Library and Chinese and Indian dance displays in St Nicholas's Church.

Today, there will be African drumming in the library and salsa dancing in the Gala Theatre, while tomorrow, there will be martial arts displays in Millennium Place.
