QUINNS gained revenge over Masons Arms with a 2-0 win to lift the B&A Trophy in their first season in the Jackson Anderson Accounatnts Spennymoor League.

Less than a week earlier, Division One side Masons knocked Division Two outfit Quinns out of the League Cup with a dramatic 2-1 victory in the semi-finals.

But the underdogs got their revenge with a surprise win in the first of three finals for the Masons.

The favourites missed first-half penalty before Gaz Jackson converted from the spot to put Quinns 1-0 up at the break.

And Steve Quinn added a second after the break to hand the trophy to Quinns.

"I think we deserved it on the night, " said victorious manager Keith Brain.

"We had the right attitude from start to finish, but we also got the breaks. In the crucial moments of the game they have missed a penalty before we've scored one and that might have been the difference.

"But we've battled hard as well and we were stronger, particularly in the first half, and I don't think they could have had many arguments with the result."

Gracious Masons boss Stuart Savage admitted: "They deserved it on the night. They were strong and worked hard and didn't let us play. We couldn't match them on the day, they wanted it more than we did.

"We improved in the second half, without really looking like scoring, but we've missed a penalty and they've converted theirs and that was the turning point in the game."

The Kelvin McIntosh Division Two Cup Final between Belvedere and Quinns will be played tonight, and the Division One Cup Final between Masons Arms and Hunwick Joiners will go ahead on Sunday. All finals are being held at Coxhoe Athletic's ground in Coxhoe.

Ten clubs have been drawn in the Paul Stevens Memorial Trophy. Due to the hectic fixture backlog for most clubs this season, most clubs were not able to commit to the invitation-option trophy this season.

But Division One heavyweights Lakeside and Old Shildon have drawn each other in the opening stages of the competition.

In the first round, Division Two side Ash Tree were due to take on Division One club Bay Horse on Tuesday this week, while Shildon Athletic will play Green Tree - the winners of those games will face each other in the second round.

Meanwhile, the other second round ties consist of Belvedere v George & Dragon, Lakeside v Old Shildon and Horndale Celtic v Southerne Club.

The semi-finals are due to be played on Tuesday, May 16 and a provisional date of Friday, May 26 has been set for the final, venue to be confirmed.

The league's end-of-season presentation night will take place on Friday, June 9 at Old Shildon WMC, with entertainment by local band the Zoo, tickets priced £3.

The next league meeting will be the AGM at the North Briton in Aycliffe Village on Wednesday, June 7 from 8pm.
