POLICE have carried out an operation to crack down on the supply of illegal drugs in licensed premises in Derwentside.
Officers visited public houses in the Catchgate, Craghead and Tanfield Lea areas.
Dog handler PC Alison Dawson and passive drugs dog Dibley searched more than 30 people.
Sergeant Tim Robson said the area's licensees were members of Pubwatch and had instigated the operation.
He said: "This is a very positive way of dealing with the problem of drugs in licensed premises.
"Working in partnership with licensees through Pubwatch, it is possible to identify people who have been in contact with such substances.
"It sends out a clear message to those who use or supply drugs that they are not wanted in pubs and clubs.
"This is the first of many such operations planned for the summer months. The response from patrons of the public houses was very positive and we hope our actions reassure members of the public they are safe going out for a drink and to socialise in County Durham without their evening being spoiled by the menace of drugs."
A man in his mid-20s was arrested on suspicion of possessing drugs and has been bailed pending further enquiries.
It is thought he had cannabis as well as some white powder and tablets, which have been sent away for testing.
Alcohol was also seized from youths in Annfield Plain park after complaints from residents about rowdy behaviour.
