WORK has begun to create five affordable homes for older residents in Richmond.
Richmondshire District Council is working in partnership with Tees Valley Housing Group to build the flats in Nuns Close.
Councillor Linda Curran, member champion for disability issues, said: "I am so pleased that this project is under way.
"Providing homes which people can actually afford to live in, be it buying or renting, is one of our top priorities and we are committed to making 120 affordable homes available by 2009.
"This site, which is close to the market place, shops and amenities, is one of the very few areas in Richmond which gives continuous level ground access into town."
The flats are due to be completed by April. During construction, parts of Nuns Close car park will be cordoned off, resulting in a reduction in spaces.
