TRAFFIC police will tell people about the perils of mixing drugs with driving during an event to mark National Drug Awareness Day.

The Safer Hartlepool Partnership will host a special event in the Middleton Grange Shopping Centre on Tuesday, between 10am and 4pm.

Traffic police will be present, alongside their vehicles, to give information on the devastating effects of driving under the influence of drugs.

There will be a chance to find out how being under the influence can affect your driving skills by driving a remote control car while wearing "beer goggles".

Throughout the day, personnel from drug treatment services will be available to discuss their work.

Planning and commissioning manager at the partnership, Chris Hart, said: "This event is for members of the public and those affected by drugs misuse to see what services the partnership offers.

"It will also provide an opportunity for people to ask any questions about how we are tackling the issue in the town, while getting involved in some of the interactive workshops.

"The partnership works all year round to provide services to the community, and this event will allow us to break down some of the barriers and dispel some myths associated with drug misuse."

The Community Drug Centre, in Whitby Street, is also marking National Drug Awareness Day by hosting an open day between 11am and 6pm.

This will give people a chance to see what is available to drug misusers and talk to staff involved in support programmes.
