A TEESSIDE art student has been awarded a scholarship to help her on to the career ladder.

Amelia Martin, 19, beat off the competition to gain the scholarship from the Helena Kennedy Foundation.

The foundation supports second chance students to help them progress to higher education.

Amelia, from Linthorpe, in Middlesbrough, has studied a BTEC Diploma in Design Crafts at Cleveland College of Art and Design.

She was nominated for the award by the colleges' Aim Higher co-ordinator, Kim Burn, who said: "Amelia has grown in self-confidence, and has been an asset to us in her capacity as a peer mentor, and promotion of widening participation.

"Amelia has also supported Aim Higher at various events during her time on the BTEC diploma."

The scholarship will cover the cost of course fees during Amelia's three year BA (Hons) Mixed Media Fine Art course at the University of Westminster.

Amelia said: "The design crafts course has given me the chance to experiment.

"I feel that the skills and techniques I've gained have given me the opportunity to progress."
