HOMEOWNERS across Darlington are being warned to be vigilant, following a spate of burglaries in the town.
A number of homes, shed and garages have been broken into over the past few weeks.
The thefts have been happening at all times of day and night night.
So police last night warned householders to ensure that they keep their doors locked and windows closed and to take their valuables upstairs when they go to bed.
Acting Inspector Penny Taylor said: "People are leaving their property insecure, leaving patio doors insecure and leaving valuables on display.
"We would ask people to take their valuables upstairs to bed with them so that somebody doesn't come and look through a window and see things like handbags and car keys on display."
Act Insp Taylor said police would also like to remind motorists not to leave handbags, laptops and other items on display in their parked cars.
There is still a problem with car break-ins in the town, especially the theft of satellite navigation equipment.
She also reminded drivers to remove all trace of the devices, including the cradles and any sucker marks which remain on the windscreen.
