YOUNGSTERS in Darlington were encouraged to go green when a special visitor called at two primary schools yesterday.
Children's cartoon character Bob the Builder visited Whinfield and St Bede's primary schools to launch Asda's community recycling campaign in Darlington.
The Whinbush Way store chose the BBC character because in the show's next series, he is building an eco-town, called Sunflower Valley, which uses recycled materials as well as solar and wind power.
The store already has recycling bins for materials including newspapers, cans and bottles, and has recently added in-store bins for computer cartridges and mobile phones.
They are also collecting used stamps for the Salvation Army, to raise money for wind-up radios for Africa.
Sarah Makepeace, the supermarket's events coordinator, said: "This year, we decided to take our recycling campaign out to schools.
"It is to raise awareness for children of how you can recycle and what you can recycle."
Darlington Borough Council will be in Asda, Whinbush Way, on Thursday, May 25, to promote recycling to residents.
