TOWNS and villages across the county have been praised by the judges of this year's Yorkshire In Bloom competition.

The results of the spring judging were announced yesterday.

Entrants are given feedback, but not a set of marks. Summer judging will result in entrants being marked to a standard of gold, sliver gilt, silver or bronze.

Appleton Wiske, near Northallerton, which won the village section in the national Britain in Bloom competition two years ago, was commended for its high standards.

In Kirkby Malzeard, the judges said the volunteers should be justly proud of the many small, colourful front gardens.

Helmsley was called a delightful entry with the potential to go much further in the competition.

Whitby, Pickering and Ripon were praised, but judges said more support from the business sector would lead to higher marks.
