A MAN who falsely claimed more than £4,000 in housing benefit has been given a conditional discharge for two years.
Anthony Stephenson, 32, of Brantwood Terrace, Tindale Crescent, Bishop Auckland, pleaded guilty to claiming rent assistance, despite owning the property.
Bishop Auckland Magistrates' Court heard he claimed £4,208.59 which he was not entitled to from March 2004 to December 2004.
James Luke, in mitigation, said: "He reported this himself as soon as it was brought to his attention.
"He has since paid a substantial amount back and will continue to do so.''
