A CAR sales consultant is swapping cars for cues later this month as he aims to retain his World Billiards Championship crown.
Chris Shutt, 28, who works at Sherwood's Vauxhall and Chevrolet dealership, in Standard Way, Northallerton, will defend his championship against the world's best at Pontins Holiday Park, in Prestatyn, north Wales.
After beating Mike Russell in last year's final, Mr Shutt, who is originally from Stockton, added the trophy to a growing list of billiards accolades.
He practises three times a week at Tables, in Thornaby, and alongside his career with Sherwoods, also works hard to secure sponsorship to support his sporting endeavours.
Mr Shutt's first success was in 1996 when he won the National Junior Billiards Championship, which he followed by reaching the World Matchplay final in 1999 and 2001.
Before last year's success, his best performance in the World Championships came in 2001 when he reached the quarter-finals, aged just 23.
This year's tournament begins on May 30, and the competitors will be playing for a top prize of £5,000.
Mr Shutt, who lives with his wife, Lisa, and son, Samuel, in Acklam, Middlesbrough, said: "I am really looking forward to this year's championship, although it's always more difficult going in as the defending champion.
"There are some very talented players taking part, but I am feeling confident.
"Sherwoods has been very supportive, as have all my sponsors who continue to back me."
