A YOUNG woman allegedly twice stabbed with a samurai sword then run over as she lay dying had moved home to get a new start, it has been revealed.

Carie Burns, 21, moved to Consett, in County Durham, a week ago, from Kendal, in Cumbria. On Friday morning, she was found dying in the street.

A former neighbour, Vikki Bland, said: "She only moved in on Monday and no one can quite believe it. I think she had family in County Durham who she was moving to be with.

"You just don't hear of people moving to make a new start and being found dead days later."

Ms Burns had been among a number of people who attended a party at a house in Thomas Street, on Thursday.

Residents said the house was well known to police and had been raided a number of times in recent months.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "There were always problems in that house.

"I feel sorry for the people who live next door as there was always parties, which would go on until the early hours."

Police investigating the death said Ms Burns had become involved in a disagreement with a fellow partygoer in the early hours of Friday.

It is understood she had stayed behind at the party after most of the other guests left, and the argument flared up again at about 6am, when Ms Burns was allegedly attacked inside the house with a short, ornamental, samurai sword inside the house.

She was taken by ambulance to the University Hospital of North Durham, but died shortly after arrival.

A man, understood to be 36-year-old Hugh Penrose of Thomas Street, Blackhill, has been charged with murder and is due to appear before Consett magistrates this morning.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0845 60 60 365.
