YOUNGSTERS at a Stockton school became songwriters for a day when they took part in music workshops.

More than 20 pupils at Bishopsgarth School expressed their creative flair under the guidance of North-East DJ and music producer Nicola Zena Lumley.

One group composed a dance track, another produced a film score, and some of the older students wrote songs about their life experiences.

The electronic musical concepts and vocals were then recorded on mini disk, using a drum machine, mixing desk and keyboards.

The workshops were organised by Creative Partnerships Tees Valley, part of a national education programme to develop partnerships between schools, cultural organisations, businesses and individuals.

Evelyn Wilson, head of music at the school, said: "Nicola caused great excitement at our school. She brought out of a varied group of pupils an enthusiasm for songwriting and a delight in producing high-quality work."

Ms Lumley, 36, said: "The young people have instantly been able to relate and connect with the musical elements of the project.

"Writing lyrics is a very cathartic process, and allows people to go down the path of self-discovery.

"I think that workshops like these are inspiring, and really enable the opportunity to broaden young people's minds."
