AS the warmer weather arrives, one dirty back alley is becoming a breeding ground for maggots and flies.

According to nearby residents, the alleyway has been strewn with litter and dirty mattresses for weeks, despite repeated calls to Middlesbrough Council.

Householders in Tennyson Street, are calling on the authority to bring the situation under control before it becomes a health hazard.

Resident Cath Rozevskis, said: "The street cleaners aren't even picking up the litter as they are walking through the area.

"The road sweepers have just been down the street and it looks exactly the same as it did before. We filmed it on a camera phone so that we could prove it happened.

"This is not the first time it has happened, and it will become a health hazard. The maggots and flies are making the place absolutely disgusting."

A Middlesbrough Council spokesman said the street's rear lane is secured by alley gates, which should prevent illegal dumping.

He said: "We take all complaints like this very seriously, and will inspect this area and see whether it has been cleaned satisfactorily and will do something about it if necessary.

"We are aware that there has been a problem with trade waste being dumped in the area and we are currently investigating that. If anyone has any information relating to rubbish being dumped, they should contact the council. If the alleygates are secured there should be no problem to the rear of the street."
