A RETIRED teacher has been appointed mayor in his adopted town for the second time.

Councillor Dudley Waters took over the post of Mayor of Sedgefield from Councillor Maxine Robinson this week.

He first held office in 1991, four years after joining Sedgefield Town Council.

Coun Waters is from Kent but after studying at University College London and teaching for a short time in the South, he moved North for promotion.

He taught at Billingham Campus School, Stockton, until his retirement in 1993, by which time he was an assistant headteacher.

Coun Waters is an active member of Sedgefield Community Association, presently holding the post of treasurer, and helps organise Sedgefield Medieval Fair, the village Proms in Park and will be involved in Trimdon Music Festival when it relocates to Sedgefield later this year.

He has helped secure grants for local projects including improvements to the grounds of Ceddesfeld Hall and a new village heritage trail.

During his year as mayor, he will support Alzheimer's Research and local groups with his charity campaign.

Coun Waters said: "It is an honour and pleasure to be mayor again."
