NEWCASTLE was decked out in black and white yesterday as the city paid homage to the football club's most prolific goalscorer.
Newcastle United's number nine Alan Shearer attended his testimonial game against Celtic last night.
All 52,000 seats were snapped up within hours of going on sale and the former England captain has pledged to donate the proceeds - expected to top £1m - to charity.
When the skipper led the team out for the last time before retiring, fans held aloft cards that spelt out "Shearer 9".
Shop windows in the city were decked out in the teams' colours and even Grey's Monument was draped in black and white stripes.
The Centre for Life had a Tyrannosaurus Rex dressed in a strip and the Theatre Royal put up bunting.
It was a show of appreciation for the man who topped Toon legend Jackie Milburn's record of scoring 200 goals for the club.
Black and White Day was organised by the Newcastle-Gateshead Initiative and all of those taking part have encouraged to raise money for Shearer's nominated charity, the NSPCC.
Soccer stars from all over the country attend a dinner in his honour on Wednesday night.
