A US manufacturer of laboratory instruments for the pharmaceutical industry has chosen to locate its European office in the region.

MatriCal Inc has opened an office at Northminster Business Park, in York.

The launch of MatriCal EU Limited will create three jobs this year and another three next year.

MatriCal was set up in the US six years ago and specialises in the development of unique sample management products for large pharmaceutical companies, with the capability to store millions of samples in perfectly controlled conditions.

The company recently increased revenue by 54 per cent from $4.2m (£2.25m) to $6.5m (£3.49m), while sales in Europe are expected to reach $2m (£1.1m) by the end of 2006.

UK director Dermot Boylan said: "We are at a very exciting stage in the development of the company and opening a satellite office in York is proving a great decision."

The company received support from inward investment agency york-england.com.

Dr Deborah Girdlestone, of Science City York, said: "The fact that this rapidly expanding and highly respected company has chosen York as its European base further endorses the leading role the city is developing in the bioscience sector, not just in the UK but worldwide."
