HEARTBROKEN Middlesbrough fans applauded their valiant heroes as they fell at their final hurdle to European glory last night.

They continued to chant and applaud for their heroes as they collapsed broken-hearted on the pitch following Seville's 4-0 victory in the UEFA Cup final.

A third fightback was not to be for Boro, who, in previous rounds, twice come from behind to pull off 4-3 aggregate wins against FC Basle and Steaua Bucharest.

As Seville players paraded the trophy, Middlesbrough fans stayed in the stadium to sing the name of chairman Steve Gibson.

It was a fitting tribute Mr Gibson, who has shown unwavering backing for manager Steve McClaren.

His loyalty was rewarded as Middlesbrough completed their journey from the verge of extinction 20 years ago to a European final.

Captain Gareth Southgate admitted: "On the night, they were the better side. We could have played better, we know we haven't played as well as we can on the night, but credit to them, they are a class side."

It could all have been so different if referee Pandel had spotted a 75th minute push on Viduka in the opposition's penalty box with the score at 1-0.

From that moment, Boro's hopes fell apart as Seville added three goals in 12 minutes to their first half-strike.

After the match, Mr Gibson said: "We were well beaten by a very good team. There were a lot of incidents in the 90 minutes, sometimes you get them, sometimes you don't.

"We have had a great year, but we have lost the game to a very good team, and all congratulations go to them. We will take it on the chin."
