A MAN remains in a critical condition after walking into the path of a bus yesterday evening.
The 42-year-old was crossing Marton Road, in Middlesbrough, shortly after 5pm when the accident happened directly outside the James Cook University Hospital.
The man, from the Grangetown area, had ran behind two cars and then into the path of the number 27 Arriva bus, which was travelling south from Middlesbrough towards Marton.
He sustained serious head injuries and remains in a critical condition in the James Cook University Hospital.
Cleveland Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident and anyone with information is asked to call PC Andy Blackett, of the road policing unit, on (01642) 301552.
Tony Batty, a spokesman for Arriva, said: "Obviously at this stage our thoughts are with the person who was run over and his family and with our driver and these are our main concern.
"We can confirm an Arriva bus was involved in an accident involving a person last night in the Marton Road area.
"There were no passengers on board and we are assisting police with their investigations and carrying out our own into the cause of the accident."
